Apparently Fort Worth has a pet problem? I was not aware of this, and I am not sure that I could pin down any tangible symptoms. Nonetheless, that is what a WFAA article says about a city move to increase pet license costs. The fee for pets with microchips is nominal, but the amount gets a little bit more steep for pets without microchips.
This really irks me. It isn’t justified and we don’t have a pet problem. The real problem here is a simple budget shortfall being passed on to the people. It’s no different than the sprinkler permit that was enacted, or the alarm permit. No different than toll roads that never go away when the roads actually do pay for themselves. It’s a classic example of nickle and diming. And I only expect more of it. Imagine a paint permit for the municipal toxin drainage problem.
Governments (municipal, state, and federal) never relinquish a source of income once they get used to it; and they always need more. Soon the highest of tax brackets will be within 7 percentage points of paying 50% of their income to federal taxes alone. It might not effect your pocket book now, but when you start to think that gasoline is high in price, take a look at the price of eggs.
