The Ringling Brothers Circus is performing their “Over the Top” show through Sunday at the Convention Center Downtown. There was a throng of folks heading in tonight, and from the video I saw on the interwebs, it actually looks pretty darn entertaining. Come to think of it I can’t think of the last time that I went to a circus.
I noticed that not all of the attendees were of the usually familial variety, but that there were some protesters as well. One guy had a bull-horn and was yelling “Animal Abuse isn’t family fun; animal abuse is torture”. Another had a sign that read “Ringling Profits, Animals Pray”.
I support the right to protest. I think bullhorns might be a little much at an event comprised mainly of families. I also think that the circus is a unique past time enjoyed throughout history, and throughout the world. “If I am causing no harm it shouldn’t bother you”. And while I do believe that it is possible to be cruel towards an animal, I do not believe generally in the whole cruelty towards animals thing.
Now please enjoy this from Ben Harper; at Bonnaroo I believe in 2002.
