Peter Greenberg’s Ask the Locals City Guide featured an interesting article on a trip to Fort Worth. They seemed to hit the highlights like the Stockyards, Billy Bob’s Texas, and Joe T’s. I will say that they had Fred’s Texas listed in local highlights, but aside from that it was pretty typically what you would expect to find in any standard Fort Worth visitors guide. Which is totally boring.
When new people come to town I prefer to try to get them to do some of the things that are a little off the beaten path. I am notorious for tricking people into showing up to the Spiral Diner (organic vegan food for those who don’t know), and if not that then I prefer other local eateries. Things that come to mind would be Margie’s Italian food or M&M’s Steakhouse. I would absolutely never take a visitor to Joe T’s when I could take them to The Original, but that’s just me.
I wonder what would be listed if someone were to come up with a true locals guide to Fort Worth.

Ever heard of a SmashBurger? I haven’t either. But apparently we will be familiar fairly soon as the Denver based franchise intends to open 12 new burger joints around town.

When I think about this I just can’t help but feel like there are an aweful lot of burger places around Fort Worth. This doesn’t include the fast food chains. Just the regular burgers. Dutch’s isn’t that great. Charlie’s is amazing. Fred’s is a staple. Boomerjack’s is actually pretty good. Love Shack is fine, but the new venue sure seems a little “Dallasy” to me. Jake’s is pretty good. Kincaid’s only takes cash (or did they change that?). Tommy’s differs from location to location. I still haven’t made it to Myrtle’s Burgers.
I know I am leaving some out, but you could almost write a book about all the burger places in town. With age I find that I am more likely to hold the fries.

The Burning Hotels are playing at Central Market’s Burgers and Boch tomorrow (September 3rd) at 6:00. I personally really enjoy their music and would encourage attending.
In my opinion the band could be considered Emo Core, although CM seems to classify them as Indie Pop Rock. Of course, a band like this would never even think about “classifying” themselves. Here they are on MySpace.

If you haven’t seen it yet there is a new Tex Mex place right next to Fuzzy’s on University. Old Rip has been open for about a week now, taking up the building that used to house the Gunsmoke Grill. Their food is fairly good, the menu is succinct, the porch is pretty killer.
Cy Barcus and his son purchased the property which had gone unused for about four years. The restaurant property came with a neighboring home, and plans are in the works for a zoning change to allow for the parking lot to be extended into that residential lot (we all know how tight parking can get around Fuzzy’s). Amidst other restaurant ventures Cy made a living building homes in Highland Park; I’d say he had some pretty good timing on diversifying further. Mr. Barcus and his son picked up some really great pieces of art in Dallas, and they truly are eye catching throughout the restaurant. I would certainly stop by and give it a shot if you get a chance.
For those who may wonder about the name, there is a legend in Cisco about Old Rip the horned frog. When the Eastland County Courthouse was built in 1897 the County Clerk put a horny toad inside the cornerstone. 31 years later the building was demolished and the horned critter was still inside; he was given the name Old Rip and his remains can still be found on display at the Eastland County Courthouse.
